Sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase alpha-1 subunit (ATP1A1, also known as A0340) is an isoform of the catalytic subunit of the three subunit cation transporting pump, sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase. There are three isoforms of the alpha subunit (alpha-1, alpha-2 and alpha-3), which in mouse are mapped to chromosomes 3, 7 and 1. Phosphorylation of the alpha-1 subunit modulates activity of the whole enzyme. It is robustly detected in kidney, lung, diaphragm, skeletal muscle and brain tissue, but there is evidence that it is expressed in most of the tissues. This integral membrane enzyme is involved in maintenance of resting potential across the plasma membrane, and hence also in the ability of neurons to propagate the action potential. In research on humans and also rats the apha-1 isoform has been linked to hypertension.
